Transport and Public Works:
With respect to Metrorail’s decision to cancel its train service on the Northern Line between Wellington and Kraaifontein, as well as between Kraaifontein and Cape Town:
- How many passengers are expected to be affected on average per weekday because of the cancellation of the (a) T3508, (b) T3511, (c) T3512, (d) T3515, (e) T3516, (f) T3517 and (g) T3518 train operations;
- whether Metrorail has made alternative transport arrangements for the affected passengers; if so, what are the relevant details;
- (a) what essential safety equipment was stripped from the area that resulted in the cancellation of the train services, (b) how much would it cost to refurbish the area so that it would be safe for the train services to resume, (c) what is the timeline for the repairs and (d) how much revenue is Metrorail expected to lose per day for the cancelled train services as stipulated in (1)?
In terms of Rule 196 [1] a member may put a question to any member of the Provincial Cabinet concerning any matter falling within the area of responsibility of that member of the Provincial Cabinet. Metrorail is a component of PRASA, a SOE which is wholly owned by the National Government.
