With regard to the unlawful investment of R350 million of municipal funds by the George Municipality with Old Mutual and the commission earned from the transaction by the son of the Executive Councillor for Finance:

 

  1. Whether this matter has been referred to the Hawks or SA Police Service as a criminal complaint; if so, (a) who reported it, (b) when was it reported, (c) to which unit, (d) what is the case number and (e) what was the nature of the criminal complaint;
  2. whether any political office-bearers were included for investigation; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
  3. what is the progress of any criminal investigation?
Answer Body: 

2 (1) An enquiry was initially opened at the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (HAWKS), George enquiry number 02/07/2018. A criminal docket was subsequently registered;

          (a) the Municipal Manager;

          (b) 23 July 2018;

          (c) HAWKS

(d) GEORGE CAS 396/06/2019

(e) Allegations relating to fraud/corruption.

  1. A decision on who to criminally investigate, following the opening of a criminal docket, lies with the HAWKS. It is my understanding that the enquiry included allegations against the Chief Financial Officer and Councillor Cronje.  
  2. The matter is still under investigation and the media liaison for the HAWKS should be contacted for further details.
