Human Settlements
(a) How long is the current waiting list for housing in Mitchells Plain and (b) which projects are currently in the (i) planning phase and (ii) implementation phase?
- As at July 2019, the number of applicants on the waiting list for Mitchells Plain stands at 17 509.
- (i) The Highlands Drive project - 711units: The City is in the advanced planning stage.
- The Beacon Valley Housing project – 1818 units: The City has called for tenders for the provision of internal services.
It should also be noted that my Department is currently undertaking the Kosovo Informal Settlement Project in the Mitchells Plain area, which forms part of the Southern Corridor Integrated Human Settlement Programme, as registered Catalytic Project. The project comprises of three main components:
- Kosovo Informal Settlement Project;
- Farm 694 New Woodlands; and
- Philippi Wedge
This project will ultimately provide approximately 10 000 housing opportunities to beneficiaries in the Kosovo Informal Settlement, backyarders from the Mitchells Plain area, as well as qualifying beneficiaries from informal settlements in the Philippi area.
The Kosovo Informal Settlement project is in an advanced planning stage and will be implemented in phases as and when statutory approvals are in place and funding allows.
The Farm 694 New Woodlands project will be the first to be implemented as Phase 1 of the construction programme.
A contractor has been appointed by the Department and construction will commence imminently. This project will provide for 440 BNG opportunities for qualifying beneficiaries from the Kosovo Informal Settlement as well as backyarders from Mitchells Plain, as agreed to by the Project Steering Committee for the project.
