With regard to her Sanitary Pad Project:

 

    1. (a) How many schools and (b) which schools in Mitchells Plain benefited from the Sanitary Pad Project in the last financial year;

 

    1. how many (a) learners received sanitary products through the project and (b) sanitary products were distributed in the (i) 2019 and (ii) 2020 academic year;

 

    1. what is the process for applying for these sanitary pad donations;

 

    1. whether this project will continue in the 2021/22 financial year; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

A total number of 220 schools are participating in Sanitary Dignity Project.

(b) which schools in Mitchells Plain benefited from the Sanitary Pad Project in the  

      last financial year;

  1. How many schools (a) learners received sanitary products through the project and

To date the total number of 94817 learners received sanitary product through the project thus far.

(b) sanitary products were distributed in the (i) 2019

In 2019 – None. The Project had not commenced for implementation yet.

(ii) 2020 academic year

Products were received by end of February 2020. The National State of Disaster was declared in March 2020. Product distribution commenced in September 2020.

  1. what is the process for applying for these sanitary pad donations;

Schools were nominated by the Western Cape Education Department Head office by performing an analysis of the highest absenteeism rate of girls at schools. The total number of 220 schools were nominated across the province.

  • All quintiles are accommodated for – no discrimination
  • Grades 4 -12
  • Ages 10 – 19
  • Expressed need from Districts or schools directly.

The Department of Social Development is provided with a list of schools based on the above criteria.

The project will continue for the 2021/22 Financial year.

Budget commitment: R 10 509 000

Target: 90 000 girl learners
