(5) what was the shortage of police officers in (a) 2019/20 and (b) 2020/21?

Answer Body:

The reply of the South African Police Service (SAPS):

6.      (1)   (a)     (i)   1:526

                           (ii)  1:549

This is not a true reflection as these ratios include only SAPS Act members at police station level but exclude units and components that deliver specialised services to communities across policing precincts in the Western Cape (including City of Cape Town):

      • Provincial Head Quarters
      • Cluster Offices
      • Cluster operational capacity and tracing teams
      • K9 Dog Units
      • Flying Squad
      • Mounted Unit
      • 10111 Command Centre
      • Vehicle Identification Section
      • Vehicle Crime Investigation Section
      • Protection Services
      • Firearm Registration Centre
      • Public Order Policing Unit
      • Tactical Response Unit
      • Operational Coordination Centre
      • Stock Theft Unit
      • Family, Child and Sexual Offences Unit
      • Anti-Corruption Unit
      • Provincial Organised Crime
      • Provincial Commercial Crime
      • Crime Intelligence
      • Directorate Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI)
      • Railway Police
      • Anti-gang Unit
      • Technology Management Services
      • POP Reserve
      • Training Institutions

…             (b)     (i)   1:350

                           (ii)  1:378

These ratios include all SAPS Act members and members of units and components that deliver specialised services to communities across policing precincts in the Western Cape.

         (2)   (a)     No

                 (b)     No
