  1. With reference to the report of 30 March 2015 that the South African Police Service (SAPS) had managed to reduce its forensic backlog of 59023 cases to a commendable level of about 4400 case entries which represents a 92 percent backlog reduction up to the third quarter of 2014/15, (a) how many of these cases had bearing on the Western Cape, (b) how many laboratory technicians were involved, (c) what was the cost to the taxpayer and (d) how many of the following cases were dealt with, (i) DNA, (ii) drug analysis and (iii) trichology;
  1. whether these results have been instrumental in bringing offenders and criminals to task; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
  2. whether his Department has oversight measures in place to avoid a repeat of the forensic evidence backlog; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
