. Yes. The Department of Community Safety aims to increase safety through local and intergovernmental safety partnerships to reduce youth violence and gangsterism. The Department of Community Safety through the Chrysalis Academy provide opportunities for the identified youth. A key component of the Chrysalis Academy’s three month residential programme focuses on career guidance, aptitude testing and the acquisition of technical and vocation skills for them to become more employable and divert them from gangsterism. The three month residential training has since 2011 been linked to a nine month work placement through the EPWP Youth Work Programme. The Department with the Chrysalis Academy recruits about 600 young people per annum from gang ridden areas to divert them from gangsterism and risky behavior. Furthermore the Department via the School Safety Project deployed 37 school marshals at 18 schools.
(2) Yes. The Department trained 57 NHW members during 2014/15. Provided 208 safety boots, 58 reflective vests and 11 torches at a total value of R96 000,00. Furthermore the department has supported the Mitchells Plain, Strandfontein and Lentegeur CPF’s through the Expanded Partnership Programme to the tune of R34 527 for the 2014/2015 financial year.
(3) Yes. The Department is aware that the City of Cape Town is assisting NHW’s in Mitchells Plain, with training and equipment.
