Question Body:

Whether he and his department is aware of the dire need for social housing in Merweville; if so, what is his departments plan to meet the shortage?

Answer Body:

In terms of the Growth Potential of Towns Study, 2014 Merweville has a low growth potential rating. Furthermore, the Provincial Spatial Development Framework, 2014 advises us to invest in towns that have settlement growth opportunities.

The Western Cape Housing Demand Database has a recorded housing demand of 216 individuals for Merweville. This town represents approximately 0.09% of the housing demand outside the Metro and is therefore not deemed as a town in dire need for social housing when compared to the scope of the housing problem within the surrounding municipalities.

Due to the limited financial resources, my department prioritises human settlement interventions with other towns having a greater demand for housing.

However, in terms of the Beaufort West Housing Pipeline one project has been listed for Merweville for 50 units via the Integrated Residential Development Programme for possible implementation during the 2021/22 financial year.
