Answer Body:

16.     a) Yes, the Education District implemented a number of interventions to improve the 2017 pass rate, including the following:

Tutoring sessions were held on Saturdays for identified subjects at risk for all learners at risk. The Grade 11 results of 2016 were used to identify these learners. Learners were also provided with food every Saturday to optimise learning.

28 January – 18 March 2017

22 April – 3 June 2017

29 July – 2 September 2017

Seasonal Schools were run for 1 week during each School vacation:

Autumn School:   2 April – 7 April 2017

Winter School:      3 July – 7 July 2017

Spring School:      1 October – 6 October 2017

All learners at risk of failing were provided with the following resources:

  • Printed copies of all previous Question Papers per subject
  • Mind the Gap study materials
  • Telematics lessons
  • Siyavula Mathematics Study Guides

School Psychologists supported all schools that had achieved below 80% in 2016, with the following interventions:

  • Study Skills workshops
  • Motivational work sessions

Learners of Aloe, Westridge, Glendale and Portland, who were struggling with Afrikaans First Additional Language were registered to offer the subject IsiXhosa Home Language as an 8th subject, thereby increasing their chances of passing.

Subject Advisors arranged and conducted “last push” sessions just prior to the final examination in the following subjects:

  • Mathematical Literacy;
  • Business Studies;
  • Economics;
  • Accounting;
  • Physical Sciences;
  • Life Sciences;
  • Afrikaans HT and
  • English HL

The 232 Progressed learners of the Mitchell’s Plain Schools received intensive support at the Khanya centre in the form of:

  • Saturday Classes
  • Seasonal Camps at the Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology
  • Homework Hubs

The District hosted quarterly reflection meetings with the principals and Grade 12 co-ordinators [of the <80% schools] to assess the impact of the interventions.

Circuit managers guided schools in developing School Improvement Plans and Target-setting. Targets were reviewed each Term, using the Term Performance Results as a yardstick to determine whether schools would reach the targets.
