Economic Opportunities
How many jobs were created through tourism and tourism-related departmental interventions in each of the non-metropolitan municipalities in the Western Cape?
Through our Project Khulisa growth strategy, we have set ourselves the goal of adding up to 100 000 jobs to the tourism sector.
Between 2009 and 2013, jobs in the tourism sector grew by 7.8% annually.
Since 2009, tourism arrivals to the Western Cape have increased by 100 000. Each year, we welcome 1.4 million tourists tour region.
As part of Project Khulisa, we have identified the need for improved economic intelligence on the tourism sector. Currently, we rely on numbers from the Food and Beverages, Hotels and Restaurants and Air Transport and Transport Supporting Activities sectors. To more accurately report the sector’s performance, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism will monitor monthly actual arrivals per country, the average length of stay per country, and the average spend per day.
Sectors servicing the tourism sector provide an indication of job performance in the tourism. Between 2010 and 2015, steady employment growth was recorded in the non-metro municipalities in these sectors.
