Community Safety
Whether there are any plans to provide the Brooklyn area (Ward 55) of Cape Town with a safety kiosk; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
There are at present no plans to donate a safety kiosk. This is primarily due to the fact that no formal application for a safety kiosk was received from the Brooklyn area. The Department of Community Safety donates safety kiosks in the main to entities who participate in our Community Safety Improvement Partnership (CSIP) strategy and relevant safety programmes. Despite the Department of Community Safety prioritising requests for safety kiosks in line with strategic priorities, all requests for safety kiosks receive due consideration.
Previous informal talks emanating from oversight walkabouts in the Brooklyn area with safety stakeholders around the possibility of a safety kiosk being donated reached an impasse due to challenges identifying a suitable dedicated organisation to take ownership of the safety kiosk.
Once an application for a safety kiosk is approved, the kiosk is donated to the applicant organisation which is required to take ownership of the kiosk and supervise the manning of such kiosk.
