Cultural Affairs and Sport
- How many government-organised or -sponsored cultural and sports events are planned for the next two years and (b) what are the details of each?
The list below indicates the planned events. Please note that these events may change, get cancelled and new ad hoc events may also be added should it be approved. Some Arts and Culture events may not feature yet because the adjudication for funding is currently underway. The call for events in 2024 will open in October 2023. The majority of these events are not government organised as such, government are merely contributing to these events in various manners i.e. sponsor or partial sponsoring, assistance with goods and services, assistance with organising, logistical arrangements, hosting etc.

Public Library Seminar 4 – 6 September 2023 (Mutual Park, Pinelands) | The seminar is initiated by the City of Cape Town Library and Information Service, and partially sponsored by DCAS. It is aimed at public library staff to highlight public libraries' work within their different communities, showcasing innovative programmes, collaborations, and activities. |
South African Library Week (March) | DCAS hosts a launch event to mark the beginning of South African Library Week in a public library at different municipalities annually in March.

National Archives Awareness Week (June) | DCAS is responsible for Archives awareness week events within the province which are linked to the national theme. A launch event is held to mark the beginning of the National Archives Awareness Week. |
Minstrel, Christmas Bands and Malay Choir festivities (December, January – February) | DCAS annually contributes financially to the New Year Road March as well as the competitions and activities of the various boards during the festive period. |
Support to festivals (Throughout the year) | Annually DCAS contributes to the KKNK, Suidoosterfees, Cape Town Carnival and Jazzathon.

Cultural Affairs Awards (September/October) | This event is organised by the department to pay homage to the contributions made to the sector by individuals, organisations and institutions and showcase the talent within the province. |

LANGUAGE EVENTS |

Youth Day: 16 June 2023 | Department will partner with the Western Cape Language Committee (WCLC) and other language stakeholders to celebrate Youth Day under the theme “Youth power; growing South Africa together in the period post COVID -19”. |
International Literacy Day: 8 September 2023 | Department will partner with the WCLC and other language stakeholders. Activities will include but not limited to a Spelling Bee, reading competition and storytelling. Our Language Practitioners will be the adjudicators for the Spelling Bee and reading competitions. |
Heritage Day: 24 September 2023 | Language Symposium hosted with language partners. |
Two-hundred-year commemoration of the existence of isiXhosa as a written language: November 2023 | Department will partner with WCLC and other language stakeholders to collaborate in hosting a series of programmes to honour this event. |
International Mother Language Day: 21 February 2023
| Department will partner with WCLC and other language stakeholders by hosting an event to promote multilingualism, indigenous language and South African Sign Language. |
