  1. What is the number of extortion cases affecting businesses and construction sites that has been reported in the province in the last five years;

(2)   which site can the public use to access reports produced by the Court Watching Brief Unit relating to criminal cases that are before the courts in the Western Cape?

The reply of the South African Police Service (SAPS):

10.    (1)   246 – Reporting period is from 1 April 2020 to 31 December 2023 which coincides with the release of the crime statistics by the Minister of Police.

THE MINISTER OF POLICE OVERSIGHT AND COMMUNITY SAFETY TO REPLY:

         (2)   The Department of Justice and Constitution Development manages criminal cases that are before the courts. The Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety, in line with its oversight mandate over the South African Police Service (SAPS), monitors a sample of withdrawn cases based on identified crime categories and compiles reports with recommendations. These reports are sent to the office of the SAPS Provincial Commissioner for remedial actions. The reports are not available to the public. A summary of these reports is included in the Policing Needs and Priorities report and the Minister and Members of Executive Council (MINMEC) report.
