Question Number:

Question Body:

Whether he has received feedback from PRASA as to when the central rail line will be fully functional; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body:

According to the information received by PRASA the following can be reported;

Background

The Central Corridor comprises of three (3) Train Service Lines i.e.:

1) Cape Town through Langa to Bellville,

2) Cape Town to Kapteinsklip and

3) Cape Town to Chris Hani (via Khayelitsha).

PRASA has recovered the lines between Cape Town – Bellville (via Langa) and the Cape Town – Nolungile.

PRASA is currently recovering the remaining infrastructure in tandem i.e.:

  1. PRASA is installing Signaling for the recovered lines between Langa – Bellville and

Langa – Nyanga.  In my meeting with the GCEO of PRASA, he indicated that manual signaling was the main issue presently and they have a plan to address this decisively.  I am due to attend a War Room meeting in the month of October where the GCEO will take provide a detailed report on the entire central line and related plans to ensure that the line if fully operational, safe and reliable.

  1. Whilst recovering the other Infrastructure components (Stations, Tracks, Substations, etc.) on the section between Nyanga – Kapteinsklip and Nyanga – Chris Hani, the recovery work towards Chris Hani and Kapteinsklip is envisaged to be completed by end of March 2025.
