With reference to the IOL news article published on 2 September 2024 titled “George building collapse: Public still kept in the dark as Western Cape Government receives an update on the investigation”:
- Why is the investigation by the structural engineering firm appointed by the Western Cape Government regarding the cause of the tragedy taking so long;
- whether he has received any updates from the South African Police Service and the Department of Labour regarding the status of their investigations; if so, what are the relevant details?
- In as far as the independent engineering investigation is concerned, it was indicated at the outset that the investigation could take up to 12 months to complete. The investigation is a detailed technical assessment of extensive data most of which is under the control of third parties, including other investigating authorities. The investigation is following a methodical and thorough process which includes collecting, collating and testing data and information. Requests for sharing of information by other agencies who are conducting their own investigations into the building collapse, is ongoing.
(2) No updates have been received to date from the South African Police Service or the Department of Employment and Labour.
