Question by Hon Bryant.

With regard to Cape Town recently being announced as the national winner of the WWF One Planet City Challenge:

Whether any steps are being taken by his Department to assist other Western Cape municipalities to learn from the work of the City of Cape Town through collaboration and shared learning; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body:

We congratulate the City of Cape Town for winning the national leg of the 2024 One Planet City Challenge (OPCC). The competition, hosted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), challenges local governments to submit their climate action plans which is then evaluated through WWF’s peer reviewed assessment framework.

We look forward to the outcome of the global leg of the competition, which will be announced in November 2024.

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning agrees that other Municipalities could benefit from the City of Cape Town’s experience.

The Department has therefore liaised with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), who hosts the “Environmental Management and Climate Resilience Working Group”. The City of Cape Town will be invited to present to the working group, thereby raising awareness and inspiring other cities to follow suit.
