With regard to attacks on social workers:

(a)   How many attacks on social workers have been recorded over the past five financial years, (b) how many of these cases are being investigated by the South African Police Service, (c) in which areas did these attacks take place and (d) how many social workers have resigned after being attacked?

Response

(a)

From the financial year commencing April 2019, there were 41 incidents reported. The breakdown is as follows:

6 – robbery/assault/threats; and

35 – hijacking and attempted hijackings.

(b)

All cases were reported, save for three i.e. one attempted robbery, one of threatening behaviour during a community strike and one attempted hijacking.

(c)

The attacks took place in Khayelitsha, Eerste River, Wynberg, Elsies River, Crossroads, Philippi, Gugulethu, Delft, Mfuleni, Mitchells Plain, Paarl and Langa.

(d)

None, according to the available information at this stage.
