Question Number:
6
Question Body:

With regard to the lockdown situation at the Pauw Gedenk Primary School in Drakenstein:

Whether the school is safe to use; if not, why not; if so, (a) what measures have been put in place by her Department to ensure that learners do not lose teaching or learning time and (b) when is the construction that is currently underway anticipated to be completed

Answer Body:

There is 1 (one) double storey building part of this facility comprised of 4 (four) ground- and 1st floor classrooms. The 1st floor classrooms’ existing timber floor support structure has, over time, deteriorated to the degree that its structural integrity cannot, at present, be guaranteed

At present, the 8 (eight) ground and 1st floor classrooms should not be occupied.

The WCED planned to install temporary mild steel support structures to enable continued use of all 8 (eight) ground and 1st floor  classrooms. The school and Governing Body (SGB) however prevented these works from being executed in October 2019.

The Department of Transport & Public Works Directorate Education Infrastructure (DTPW-EI) has completed design of a permanent  solution that shall simplistically comprise the introduction of additional structural support members in all 4 (four) 1st floor classrooms’  timber floor structure.

The WCED is, at present, awaiting confirmation of milestone dates for commencement and completion of on-site construction works   to execute the permanent works.
