On Thursday 30 April 2020 the Langeberg Local Municipality allegedly carried out an eviction and demolition in Ashbury, Montagu.

  1. (a) Why was an eviction carried out in contravention of the Disaster Management Act (57/2002): Directions issued in terms of Regulation 10 of the Regulations under the Act, dated 26 March 2020, and (b) which law enforcement agency or entity carried out the eviction and demolition;

 

  1. whether the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement or private security service providers were involved in the eviction and demolition; if so, why?

 

Answer Body: 
  1. (a) A shack was erected during the night or early that morning which was picked up by the patrol which is conducted at least twice a day, 7 days a week. It was established during the inspection of the structure that there were no furniture or personal belongings in the shack, after which it was demolished. The Municipality is investigating the involvement of councillors in this land invasion incident.

(b) The Municipality appointed the Red Ants to monitor land invasions with a view to slow down the mushrooming of illegal informal settlements in the municipal area. This matter relates to the occupation of private land.

  1. The Red Ants is a private security service provider, involved in the demolition.
