  1. What is the number of vehicles that have been stopped and checked at the province’s (a) fixed cross-border checkpoints and (b) secondary vehicle checkpoints from 1 April 2020 to the latest date for which information is available;
  2. what is the total number of (a) screenings and (b) tests that have been conducted at the province’s (i) fixed cross-border checkpoints and (ii) secondary vehicle checkpoints from 1 April 2020 to the latest date for which information is available;
  3. what is the total number of positive COVID-19 cases that have been found at the province’s (i) fixed cross-border checkpoints and (ii) secondary vehicle checkpoints from 1 April 2020 to the latest date for which information is available;
  4. with regard to the number of Western Cape travellers who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Eastern Cape, what are the reasons why they left the province undetected?

 

Answer Body: 
  1. (a) As part of our planned joint operations with all applicable role players,                   we are providing resources to eight (8) fixed 24/7 major inter provincial roadblocks. Between 1 April 2020 and 19 May 2020, a total of 22 213 motor vehicles were stopped at these roadblocks.     

(b) As part of the tactical deployment, we have nine (9) secondary Vehicle Check Points (VCP’s) located at strategic locations. Between 1 April 2020 and 19 May 2020, a total of 21 561 motor vehicles were stopped at these roadblocks.

The testing and screening is not part of the provincial Traffic law Enforcement mandate at these planned law enforcement interventions.  This question must therefore be directed to the authority responsible for screening and testing.
