With regard to the Port of Cape Town’s performance in September 2023:
(a) What was the (i) average waiting time for berth utilisation and occupancy for container ships and (ii) target for the month, (b) what was the (i) average number of twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers (aa) loaded and (bb) unloaded and (ii) target for the month, (c) what was the (i) average waiting time for trucks being (aa) loaded and (bb) unloaded at the port and (ii) target for the month, (d) what was the (i) average ship turnaround time and (ii) target for the month, (e) what was the (i) average anchorage waiting time and (ii) target for the month and (f) what was the (i) average container dwell time and (ii) target for the month?
I am informed of the following:
- (i) Average waiting time to berth from 1 to 30 September 2023 was 3.3 days (DEDAT, Port of Cape Town Planning Dashboard)
(ii) Target is 1 day or less.
- (i) (aa) TEU’s loaded at Cape Town Container Terminal from 2 September to 29 September were 18,308
(bb) TEU’s offloaded from 2 September to 29 September were 13,727
(ii) Target for the period was 43,800

- (i) (aa) Average waiting time for trucks to be loaded and unloaded (28 Aug to 1 October) was 60 minutes
(bb) The difference between the loading and offloading of trucks is not reported.
(ii) The target for trucks to be turned around in Cape Town Container Terminal is 40 minutes.
- (i) Average ship turnaround time was 6.9 days
(ii) Target for ship turnaround time is less than 4 days.
- (i) Average time at berth was 3.6 days
(ii) Target for time at berth is less than 3 days
- (i) Average container dwell time was 1.4 days for imports and 4.7 for exports.
(ii) The dwell time target is 3 days for imports and 6 days for exports.
