Western Cape Cultural Commission

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport invites the general public to nominate suitable persons for vacancies at the Western Cape Cultural Commission. Appointed nominees will serve the remainder of the three-year term of office. The aim of the commission is to preserve, promote and develop culture in the Western Cape in accordance with policy laid down by the Minister responsible for cultural affairs.

 

HIGH LEVEL PANEL ON ASSESSMENT OF KEY LEGISLATION AND ACCELERATION OF FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE

The panel, which former President Kgalema Motlanthe chairs, calls on the public to come to the hearing to talk about their experience of the laws of our democracy. Have they made life better? Have there been problems with applying them? What gaps should be filled?

 

Public hearings on SAPS resourcing

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Community Safety will conduct a series of public hearings focusing on the effects of vacancies and manpower shortages on the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape. These public hearings will be conducted in accordance with the national and provincial constitutions as well as the Western Cape Witnesses Act, Act 2 of 2006. The purpose of the hearings is to better understand the extent of the SAPS’s resource challenges and the impact that the lack of police resources may have on communities.

Standing Committee on Local Government to be briefed on AG findings and municipal recovery plans

On 27 September the Standing Committee on Local Government will be briefed on two important matters:

 

  1. By the Auditor General on key findings made at each of the municipalities in the province; and
  2. By the Department of Local Government and Provincial Treasury on the recovery plans to sustain the following municipalities: Beaufort West, Cederberg, Kannaland, Matzikama, Oudtshoorn and Cape Agulhas.

NCOP visit week to focus on health and education

The provincial week of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), 12 to 16 September, will focus on the delivery of education and healthcare services in communities. This provincial week is intended to ascertain the progress made in meeting the commitments made in the National Development Plan. The theme for the provincial week is “Following up on our commitments to make access to education and health care work for all”.

 

WCPP manages risk to exposed asbestos

Following the discovery and subsequent repair of exposed asbestos caused by water damage in an unused office in the Legislature Building, an investigation was conducted to identify other potential risk areas.

The investigation, commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW), has now been concluded. Additional potential risk areas have been identified and the WCPP is awaiting a final report and action plan from DTPW.
