Public hearings on the Saldanha Bay industrial development zone licencing company Bill
The Standing Committee on Economic Opportunities, Tourism and Agriculture will consider the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) Licencing Company Bill [B 5-2015] at public hearings on 1 and 2 March.
The purpose of the bill is to: regulate the operations of the Saldanha Bay IDZ Licencing Company SOC Ltd; provide for the shareholding of the Western Cape Government in the Saldanha Bay IDZ Licencing Company SOC Ltd; provide for the objects, functions and governance of the Saldanha Bay IDZ Licencing Company SOC Ltd; and to provide for matters incidental thereto.
Debate on Premier's SOPA
Premier Helen Zille delivered her State of the Province Address on 19 February. The debate on the State of the Province Address will take place on 23 February at 10:00 in the WCPP Chamber.
2016 State of the Province Address
Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille, delivered her 2016 State of the Province Address (SOPA) during the Sitting of the House on 19 February.
The occasion also marked the official opening of the Provincial Parliament for the Third Session of the Fifth Parliament of the Western Cape. The event was attended by approximately 230 guests that included members of the Cape Town consular corps, municipal Speakers and mayors, religious leaders and other dignitaries.
Swiss Ambassador pays courtesy visit to Speaker
The Ambassador of Switzerland, Ms Helene Budliger Artiega, accompanied by the Swiss Consul General, Ms Bernadette Hunkeler Brown, paid Speaker Sharna Fernandez a courtesy visit on 2 February. In their informal discussions, both parties shared information of mutual importance aimed at strengthening and maintaining the good relationship between Switzerland and the WCPP. Areas covered included research partnerships, renewable energy, trade and industry, tourism and training.
Official Opening and SOPA
The official opening ceremony of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will take place on Friday, 19 February 2016. The Premier will deliver her State of the Province Address during the sitting at 10:30.
Speaker hosts breakfast in commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities
Speaker Sharna Fernandez, hosted a breakfast in commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities at the Western Cape Provincial Parliament on 3 December.
Standing Committee to host kit handover
The Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport will be hosting the handover of kit to SAFA’s Western Cape Teams by the SAB League on 1 December.
The SAB League is a National Youth Diversion Programme within the National U21 Regional Football League, the largest grassroots football development programme in South Africa targeting 18 to 21 year olds. The SAB League has been the starting block for many of today’s greatest players participating in the Premier Soccer League, the national team and participating in the international football arena.
New Western Cape permanent delegate to the NCOP
Hon Okkie (Ockert) Terblanche was appointed as permanent Western Cape delegate to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), representing the Democratic Alliance. The motion was moved by Chief Whip of the Majority Party, Hon Mark Wiley, at the Sitting of Western Cape Provincial Parliament on 15 October. Hon Terblanche will subsequently be sworn in by the NCOP at a future sitting of the House.
New Member sworn in
Daylin Mitchell was sworn in by Speaker Sharna Fernandez as the newest Member for the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) on 21 September.
At 29, Mitchell is the youngest Member of the WCPP ever. During his political career he has served as young leader in the Democratic Alliance, as well as interim youth chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Western Cape Metro Region. From 2013 to 2014 he served as national director for provincial growth and guidance and from 2014, until becoming a Member, as Democratic Alliance chief of staff at the WCPP.
