The right of Members to put questions to Ministers is an important part of ensuring the executive authority’s accountability to the Provincial Parliament. Questions may be put to Ministers related to their spheres of responsibility. Replies to questions are either given orally in the House or in writing. In relation to the hospitalisations of young people (ie those aged between 18 and 35) as the result of alcohol abuse:

(a) What is the (i) cause and (ii) extent of the damage, including affected sections of the building, caused by the fire that broke out at the Vredendal Hospital, (b) what will be the impact of the damage on service delivery at the hospital, (c) what is the number of (i) patients and (ii) staff who were affected by the fire, (d) what is the number of persons who were treated for fire-related injuries resulting from the incident and (e) what has been the Department’s response to the fire;

With regard to the serious allegation of sexual misconduct by a UCT professor who is employed by her Department:
(1) (a) What is her Department’s policy for dealing with allegations of sexual misconduct (i) in the workplace and (ii) by an employee of her Department, (b) what is the number of sexual misconduct allegations against employees of her Department, including agency staff, that were received and investigated during the (i) fourth, (ii) fifth and (iii) sixth administrations, (c) how many employees were found guilty and (d) what sanctions were issued for each case;
(2) (a) when did she and her Department become aware of the allegations of sexual misconduct by a UCT professor who is employed by her Department and (b) what are the details of the remedial action taken in response to it;
(3) whether the UCT professor has been suspended pending the investigation; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
