- What are her Department’s most recent statistics on the number of homeless people in the City of Cape Town and (b) what is the number of bed spaces in shelters and safe spaces available to homeless people in the City of Cape Town?
- The Department of Social Development does not keep statistics on the number of homeless people in the City of Cape Town. The only statistics that are kept by the Department is the number of funded bed spaces in shelters for homeless adults.
The City of Cape Town in their Annual Report of 2018/19 reported that a total of 3 999 people were living on the street, whereby a total of 871 street people were recorded in Cape Town.
- The Care and Support Services to Families sub-programme in the Directorate: Children and Families funded 26 shelters in the 2019/2020 financial year across the Western Cape Province. A total of 1 499 bed spaces were funded in that year of which the following are situated in or close to the City of Cape Town:

The ‘safe space’ is a project that is being facilitated by the City of Cape Town’s Street People Unit. The Department of Social Development is informed that the Culemborg Safe Space may accommodate up to 230 persons per night.
