  1. Whether his Department has put measure in place to reduce the risk of mud slides and rock falls in the Franschhoek Pass during the upcoming rainy season; if so, what are the relevant details;

Answer Body: 

)    The Department addressed risk at Franschhoek pass through extensive remedial works which included barring and cleaning the slopes prone to fall of unstable boulders and debris. The standard operating procedure at this stage is for maintenance teams to monitor the pass during rainfall periods, which is the same for all other passes prone to rock falls.

 A consulting engineering firm is currently appointed for a project to do periodic maintenance of Main Road 191 including Franschhoek Pass. Further safety measures will be investigated during this project.
