(a) What was the rand value of the tender awarded for the maintenance and building renovations at the Velddrif High School and (b) what is the status of the renovations and maintenance work done?
The school principal reported a construction project being abandoned approximately 3 (three) years prior to her current tenure. A Cape Town-based contractor had delivered building material and commenced with maintenance works. After a short duration of time the contractor simply disappeared. The abandoned building material and incomplete maintenance work remains. This was not a WCED project as it was undertaken by the School Governing Body, and the current principal was not able to provide a rand costing for the project.
(b) The WCED was not aware of the project as the school and School Governing Body did not report it – however, the Department will investigate the circumstances regarding the project and assist the school in finding a solution.
