(a) What is the number of COVID-19 (i) cases and (ii) fatalities that have been recorded in residential facilities for older persons as at the latest date for which information is available and (b) what measures have been put in place to protect elderly people in residential facilities for older persons from the impact of COVID-19?

Answer Body: 

(a)    (i) Number of current COVID -19 cases in residential facilities are 427 residents and 321 staff. This is out of a population of 10 000 older persons in funded Old Age Homes and an estimated population of 150 000 older persons living in Private Retirement Villages across the Province. 
(ii) Number of current fatalities reported are 147 residents and 5 staff
(b)    Provided all residential facilities with national regulations, provincial protocol and guidelines; provided national DsD with data base; provided PPE received from donations to funded residential facilities (10 000 Face Shields, 50 litres Sanitiser, 120 000 medical masks); facilitated deep cleaning of funded facilities with high rate of infections; appointed organisation to assist and support standalone facilities; provide limited relief staff in standalone facilities where high infection rate under staff are compromising the care of the elderly; link funded facilities with training being rolled out by national DsD; provided once of funds (R15 000) to funded facilities to assist with additional costs for management of COVID -19.
