With regard to the safety situation at the Liwa Primary School in Nyanga:
- Whether she and her Department have been communicating with the school with regard to the safety concerns; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
- whether her Department plans to address the safety concerns at the school; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
(1) The Department has been in contact with the school and support was provided to the school. The school has not reported any incidents to the Safe Schools Call Centre since 2017.
(2) The school was one of the schools identified for the Dimension Data project to upgrade safety and security measures at the school. Safe Schools assisted the school with an alarm system as well as securing the computer room of the school.
The school is part of the Holiday Security program and receives a subsidy for this purpose every school holiday.
During a visit to the school in 2019, the school requested Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training, First Aid training and Safety Committee training.
OHS training has been procured for a number of Metro South Education District schools, and Liwa Primary has been identified for training in the second term.
The school received an invitation from Safe Schools to register for First Aid training that was offered during the first term this year (2020). The school did not register; however, a second round of training will be offered in the second term and we will encourage the school to register and attend.
Representatives from the school attended the Safety Committee training in February 2020 and more training is planned for the second and third term.
The school is on the UAMP priority list for fencing.
The presence of motor mechanics on the pavement and the street in front of the school remains a concern. The Safe Schools Co-ordinator has made another request to Law Enforcement for assistance in removing/relocating the mechanics.
