(a) What is the number of teachers in the province who have tested positive for COVID-19 as at the latest date for which information is available and (b) what is the number of teachers and non-teaching staff who have passed away due to COVID-19 as at the latest for which information is available?
(a) The total number of school staff members, including both teaching and non-teaching staff, who have tested positive as at the latest reporting date (12 June 2020) is 239.
(b) The WCED does not report cause of death of employees, as this is a matter of private medical records which are the purview of the Department of Health. It is also an issue of respect for the privacy of the staff member, and we do not always know the cause of death. The Department of Health releases daily statistics on the number of deaths that have occurred in the Western Cape as a result of COVID-19.
