Question Number:

Question Body:

Whether the process has been completed for the recruiting of teaching assistants in the Western Cape; if so, (a) how many assistants have been recruited and (b) how long will these assistant be employed?

Answer Body:

(a)    The WCED received registrations from 6 351 interested individuals to be appointed as teacher assistants. The system is still open. Schools submitted 1 212 nominations for teacher assistants by 11 September 2020, and their stipends were processed.

(b)    The duration of their contracts is linked to the duration of Alert Levels 3 and 2.

The relevant Education Labour Relation Council Collective Agreement 1 of 2020 is applicable, which states that concessions for teachers with high-risk comorbidities are available until the end of Alert Level 2.

As the appointment of teacher assistants is to support teachers with a comorbidity who had a concession to work from home, the teacher assistant contracts will also end once the country move to Alert Level 1.
