- What was the outcome of the investigation at the Laingsburg High School into the missing NSC History examination papers and (b) what has her Department done to ensure that learners’ applications to tertiary institutions were not hampered due to a delay in the availability of results of the affected learners?
5. (a) It can be confirmed that all the candidates who wrote History at Laingsburg High School ultimately received their results.
The WCED is unable to charge the individual that was responsible for ensuring that the scripts were not submitted timeously to the WCED, as this individual retired on 31 December 2019.
The acting principal will be sensitised, trained and supported to ensure that the management of any national examination is of high standard at the school. His roles and responsibilities will be clarified in writing.
The official who was responsible for checking up on outstanding answer scripts will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures.
The WCED will review all protocols with regard to the management of answer scripts and will ensure that all staff are trained and understand their responsibilities in ensuring that every learner who writes an exam receives their results timeously.
(b) The WCED immediately liaised with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Universities South Africa (USAf). The DBE issued an updated dataset containing the amended results of the candidates to all universities and USAf liaised with the various Registrars in this regard.
The WCED was made aware of six candidates who may have experienced challenges with their enrolment at a higher education institution. The WCED liaised directly with the Registrar’s office at the respective institutions where the candidates applied to ensure that the institutions were in possession of the correct information and results of these candidates.
