Question by:
Hon Galil Brinkhuis
Answered by:
Hon Debbie Schäfer
Question Number:
10
Question Body:

Whether her Department is investigating alternative methods (such as SABC television and radio stations) to teach the school curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body:

Yes.

          The following digital resources are available and accessed through various means:

  • Nationally shared content and partnerships via the Department of Basic Education (DBE);
  • WCED Content Partnerships at no cost to WCED, e.g. Snapplify, DigiCampus, React;
  • District Advisory Teams and Head Office collaborative development of appropriate curriculum lessons and content; and
  • Contracted Service Providers for GET and FET: i.e. Telematics and Maths Curriculum Online (Green Shoots) with online Maths for Gr. 3 – 7 in both English and Afrikaans aligned to the CAPS curriculum with weekly Maths activities and school based assessments (https://www.gsed.co.za/)

The WCED is also exploring other offerings:

  • SAASTE (South African Association of Science and Technology Educators) Learning Online Moodle Site in collaboration with Metro South Education District (https://saastewc.co.za/)

Broadcasts: via TV, radio and online channels:

The officials in the department participate in various radio broadcasts and community radio stations, e.g. RSG, Zibonele, Radio 2000.

The WCED is currently discussing the broadcasting of lessons on ITV (a national television station).

A possible collaboration with Multichoice to broadcast content on dedicated education channels is being investigated.

  • The revision program for Grade 12 will be scheduled at the end of each term. A revision program for Grade 11 is being finalised.
  • Live-Streaming via social media platforms (such as Facebook) broadens the scope of learner access where broadband connectivity is available.
  • Telematics has launched a website where learners can access previous lesson broadcasts and supportive learning material (e.g. booklets).
  • The Telematics lessons are also provided to the DBE to be used in the WOZA Matric program that will be rolled out again this year on national television stations.
