What are the details of all projects this company is currently involved with, (b) what is the duration of these contracts and (c) in which municipalities are these projects being carried out?

Answer Body:

Provincial Parliament informed my department that Cawewo Construction is the developer involved in the various housing projects within the province.

Details of their involvement in the projects are as follows:

In August 2018 my department awarded a contract to Asande Civils for the construction of 321 units for the Hillside project in Theewaterskloof.   Asande then appointed Cawewo Construction. The current position with regards to the 24 units is as follows:

  • The issues they had with their supplier has since been resolved and they have been back on site since 18 March 2020.
  •  My department has instructed them to only complete the 16 structures on site and not to proceed with the remaining 8 units.

Masincedane PHP project in Strand, Cawewo was appointed by my department for the construction of 5 units which is equivalent to 1 work package which is in line with the Construction Industry Board grading.

Their contract regretfully was terminated during March 2018 due to the illegal occupation on the site.  At the time of termination, one unit was under construction.   The beneficiary of the incomplete unit approached the media. I now intend re-instating the contract in order for the unit to be completed as well as the construction of the remaining four units.

On 06 November 2017, my department appointed Katemo General Trading CC for the construction of 27 units in Saron, Drakenstein.  Katemo General then entered into an agreement with Cawewo Construction.

The current position is as follows:

  • Completion was scheduled for the end of March 2019.

  • The project was delayed due to challenges i.e. (electrical and municipal services; material supply due to the location of the project; labour issues; vandalism and theft).

The project is 90% complete.
