Question Number:

Question Body:

What is the percentage of schools in the province that (a) comply with the minimum physical infrastructure norms and standards and (b) do not comply with the minimum sanitation infrastructure standards?

Answer Body:

(a)       85.6% (1 304) out of the 1 523 WCED schools.

(b)       14.4% (219) out of 1 523 schools.

The WCED does not have any schools with inappropriate ablution facilities (i.e. pit toilets).

The WCED has 219 (14.4% of 1 523) schools reported to having an inadequate number of sanitary fixtures in relation to number of users (learners and staff) as per the WCED Norms and Standards.  This figure changes from year to year as enrolment figures at schools change.

The following progress had been made:

  • 72 of the above 219 schools will be addressed in this financial year.
  • The balance of 147 schools will be addressed over the MTEF 2021-2024.
  • Due to changes in enrolment toilet facilities will be surveyed every 3 years in order to ensure that the correct schools are targeted for intervention in the future.
