Transport and Public Works
With reference to the public-transport subsidy in the province:
- (a) How much is the subsidy that is provided by the provincial government for public transport and (b) what is the detailed breakdown of the amount that his Department has spent of the public-transport subsidy in the 2019/20 financial year;
whether he and his Department have any plans to pay any contribution to the operating costs of the services provided by minibus taxis in the future; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
- (a) In the 2019/20 financial year, the budgeted subsidies for public transport (including adjustments) were R1 188 929 000. The financial year is still underway and, therefore, full year expenditure figures against these budgets are not yet available. However, the budgets are likely to be 100% spent.
(b) A breakdown of the budgeted subsidies (including adjustments) for the 2019/20 financial year are provided below:

(2) The Department is currently developing a pilot project with the minibus taxi industry to support an improvement in the quality and safety of existing services. In terms of this project, certain industry participants will be paid to deliver services that adhere to predetermined standards.
