With regard to potential properties earmarked for housing developments in Cape Town’s inner city that are owned by the national government:
1. How many nationally owned properties have been identified by the Province and the City of Cape Town in the inner city that would be suitable for the development of social housing;
2. whether his Department or the City of Cape Town has approached the national government for the release of these properties; if not, why not; if so, what was the response from the national government?
(1) My department has identified one property in the Bo-Kaap, namely Erf 81 Tamboerskloof, for the possible development of Social Housing.
The City of Cape Town has not identified National Government land in the inner city that is earmarked for Social Housing.
(2) The National Department of Public Works (NPW) identified Erf 81, Tamboerskloof in Bo-Kaap and recommended to the National Cabinet that the property be released to the Housing Development Agency (HDA), subject to a feasibility study to be undertaken by the HDA. The HDA has requested a Power of Attorney (POA) from NPW, in order to commence with the feasibility study. Due to the delay in the release of the POA, no feasibilities studies have been undertaken by the HDA to date.
