With regard to COVID-19 vaccination registrations in the province among the population of 60 years and older:
(a) What is the percentage of residents registered as at the latest date for which information is available and (b) how has the government promoted COVID-19 vaccine registrations successful in this age group?
(a) As at 9 September, 68.7% of the population in the age bracket of 60 years and older have registered for the COVID-19 vaccine.
(b) Through our dashboard and vaccine cascade we are able to identify areas with low registrations as this is an indication of the likelihood for someone to be vaccinated. Our boots on the ground teams are actively engaging citizens in these areas to ensure everyone is provided with the correct information to make an informed decision and we are making progress. Our localized initiatives also include working with a range of partners, local leaders, trusted community voices on innovative initiatives through which we can take registration and vaccines to the vulnerable communities, making vaccination easier accessible for them. In addition to the various outreaches and community mobilization drives, several other out-of-the-box ideas are used and reaping great rewards. These include:
a. Assisted registration at vaccination sites
b. Weekend vaccinations in dedicated areas;
c. “Boots on the Ground drives” where mobile pop-up vaccination stations are set up;
d. Repurpose the Mobile Wellness bus’s function, which is used for our school health programmes, to do outreach vaccinations to vulnerable outlying communities;
e. Partnering with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to assist with registration and vaccinations at BOXER stores; and
f. Working with the Cipla Foundation to deploy innovative, movable vaccination stations into various local communities
g. Partnering with farming communities, such as in Theewaterskloof, to assist farm workers with registration and also being vaccinated
h. Active mobile registration and vaccination outreaches to farms which enables smaller communities to be vaccinated
i. Health interns alongside, Community Health workers and Neighbourhood watch members partnered for a community door to door registration drives.
