(a) What direct or indirect support programmes are or were offered by her Department for learners to catch up with educational content lost due to the late placement of learners at schools in the current academic year and (b) what are the details of the support provided?

Answer Body: 

               (a) The WCED made available a range of support mechanisms, for both GET and FET learners, to schools via district officials for learners who missed school at the start of the year due to late applications or late arrivals.

         All unplaced learners were placed at or offered places at schools in 2021. Learners who started late at schools were accommodated into existing schools’ programmes and teachers, by virtue of their professional judgement, either adapt or supplement their teaching programme to manage any deficit.

        (b) The direct support offered to schools by districts included the following:

Examples of FET support offered:

    1. Printing budget offered via districts to schools to print additional support material; additional funding offered to schools where large number of learners are admitted.    

      2. Schools had the option to arrange additional classes for learners such as afternoon, winter school and/or Saturday classes.

      3. Grade 10 – 12 - Term 1-4 self-directed lessons with content as per revised ATPs were designed and made available on WCED ePortal. Schools could print these lessons for learners. (https://wcedeportal.co.za/lessons/fet-phase)

      4. Term 1 revision material for Grade 11 designed and available on WCED ePortal.  (https://wcedeportal.co.za/grade11-subject-support)  

  5. Grade 12 subject specific resources e.g. Study Guides, 2020 revision material for terms 1-3 etc. available on WCED ePortal. (https://wcedeportal.co.za/grade12-subject-support)

     6.  Assessment to be managed as per policy – Exemption from SBA tasks for 1st term so that such learners would not disadvantaged.

     8. Subject Advisers offered support and guidance to teachers to deal with learning losses of learners who started late.
