Spelling Bee (National and Provincial)
| As part of the Integrated National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) hosted the first Spelling Bee on 10 October 2014 in Pretoria. The campaign was launched to improve Gr 4-6 learners' performance in languages, especially in English. The benefits of spelling bees extend beyond vocab development; while on stage, learners also develop self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to perform under pressure. | ||
Multilingual Writing Competition for Gr 6 learners (In collaboration with PanSALB, Afrikaanse Taalraad, PASA, Centre for the Book, DCAS & EDULIS) | To develop learners' creative writing and presentation skills, which form part of the language skills in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). | ||

Creative Arts | Annual Visual Art Celebration: celebrate my world for Gr R – 9 learners (mainstream and Special Schools). Competition took place on three levels:
| To develop Visual Art skills, visual literacy, integration of language and art. Serve as a vehicle for Arts advocacy. Develops arts appreciation and literacy in the arts, that subsequently lead to development of future arts audiences and arts consumers thereby supporting the arts economy of the Western Cape and South Africa.

AFRICA SPELLING BEE: The Western Cape was represented by Unamandla Nontswabo, a Gr 7 learner, from Liwa Primary School in Nyanga, and is the first time that the Western Cape qualifies for the African Spelling Bee. | ||
