With reference to ‘mob justice’:
(a) How does SAPS define ‘mob justice’, (b) how many instances of mob justice have been reported in the province over the last three financial years and (c) how many individuals were (i) charged and (ii) prosecuted for crimes related to mob justice over the last three financial years?
The reply of the South African Police Service (SAPS):
(a) “Mob justice “is a practice whereby a mob of persons takes the law into their own hands in order to assault, humiliate or kill a person accused or suspected of alleged wrong-doing/crime. The mob of persons may also damage or destroy the person suspected of wrong-doing/crime’s property.
(b) 532 instances for the period 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2021.
