Transport and Public Works
With reference to the reply to question 9 of 26 February 2021:
(a) How many vacant school buildings are part of the asset list, (b) how many vacant school buildings have been transferred from the Department of Education to his Department since 2009, (c) how many buildings, previously used as schools, are currently not being used for any purpose and (d) what plans are there for the repurposing or future use of these buildings?
- Fifteen (15) vacant school buildings and one (1) former education property now with no buildings any longer are currently part of the immovable asset register.
- Thirteen (13) school buildings were relinquished since 2009 by the Department of Education to the Department of Transport and Public Works. In addition, one (1) former school building was relinquished by the Department of Health.
- Fifteen (15) buildings which were previously used as schools, are currently not being used for any purpose.
- Of the fifteen (15) properties noted in response to (c), eleven (11) are being considered for disposal, one (1) is currently being refurbished for use by the Department of Education, one (1) has been allocated to the Department of Education (the property previously relinquished by the Department of Health as noted in (b)), with the remaining two (2) being considered for future use in terms of the Western Cape Government’s service delivery objectives.
