Social Development
With reference to the increasing levels of poverty and inequality in the province:
Whether her Department has plans to narrow the gap between the number of persons who is already receiving support and the thousands of other people who are in desperate need of help; if so, what are the relevant details?
DSD does have a role in alleviating the effects of poverty by providing services to vulnerable persons who cannot afford to pay for these services.
The core mandate of the Western Cape Department of Social Development and the social development sector at large is to ensure the provision of a comprehensive network of social development services that enables and empowers the poor, the vulnerable and those with special needs.
In order to be successful as fulfilling our mandate, the Department will continue to explore and test different and innovative way of working to achieve maximum results in the shortest possible time without compromising the quality of services provided to the people of the Western Cape.
In order to fulfil the Department’s core mandate, we will continue to focus on capacity building of social service professionals in government and the NPO sector to cope with the demands for developmental social welfare services and community development interventions in various communities across the Western Cape Province.
As a Department, we will remain steadfast in promoting social inclusion, reducing poverty and tackling many of the social ills present in the Western Cape to respond to the needs of the people of our province, in particular, to the needs of our most vulnerable citizens.
As a Department, we will continue to work efficiently, and in a manner that serves all the people of our Province, in particular, our most vulnerable citizens living in the Western Cape.
