(a) What progress has been made with the Agri-worker Electrification Project that was piloted in 2016 and (b) which farms have been connected?
(a) Cabinet endorsed a resolution, to pilot the supply of electricity directly from Eskom to Agri-workers on 19 February 2014. The Hex River Valley in the Breede Valley Municipal area was selected as pilot for the project. The relatively small farm sizes and associated higher density of Agri-worker households will result in a higher number of households benefiting from the investment in this project. The project is executed and funded by Eskom and the Department of Local Government was responsible for the overall project co- ordination and facilitation during the initial phase of the project up to 2019.
The implementation of the project started in September 2016 and is still under way. One thousand one hundred and fifty-six (1156) connections have been completed to date.
