With regard to the after-school game-changer:
- What are the implementation strategies currently underway in rolling out the after-school game changer, (b) which communities does the after-school game changer support, (c)(i) how are municipalities involved in the programme and (ii) what role or roles do they perform and (d) what are the measures or plans to be put in place to address the safety of learners at afterschool sites?
Answer Body:
- The After-School Programme is a continuation of the work of the Game Changer which ended with Premier Zille’s term. It is focused on creating an enabling environment for After School Programmes in the Western Cape and building the capacity of the sector.
- DCAS supports various After School Programmes (MOD, Neighbourhood Schools (NSP), YearBeyond, Scouting in Schools) with a reach into 412 no or low fee schools in the Province. The MOD and NSP provide sporting and arts ASP; YearBeyond is focused on building a culture of reading; and Scouting in Schools is focused on life skills and citizenship.

Municipalities are not involved in the programme.
- Safety is a transversal challenge. DCAS has partnered with DoCS and WCED to facilitate learner safety after school with a school risk assessment undertaken by Safer Schools and DoCs; a partnership with SAPS via WCED and DBE; deployment of SROs via DoCS and WCED; and the expansion of school safety plans to include ASPs.
