Question Body:

With reference to the subjects of Mathematics and Physical Science for learners in the province:

How many learners in (a) Grade 10 and (b) Grade 12 had (i) Mathematics and (ii) Physical Science as a subject in (aa) 2014, (bb) 2015, (cc) 2016, (dd) 2017, (ee) 2018, (ff) 2019 and (gg) 2020?

Answer Body:

16.     The table below provides the enrolment in Mathematics and Physical Sciences in Grades 10 and 12 during the period 2014 to 2021. The general trend over the period shows evidence that the number of learners registering in Grade 10 declines as they progress through to Grade 12. This could be attributed to the following reasons:

  • Schools generally allow learners that achieved above 60% in Grade 9 to offer Mathematics in Grade 10;
  • Learners may switch to Mathematical Literacy due to poor performance;
  • The province is making progress in its initiative to increase the enrolment in Mathematics as evidenced in the 2021 Grade 10 enrolment.
