  1. What is the number of COVID-19 infections as at the latest date for which information is available, (b) what is the number of Omicron variant cases in the province and (c) when was the first case of the Omicron variant detected in the (i) country and (ii) province?

 

Answer Body: 

As at Thursday, 2 December:

  1. There were 2,725 active cases in the Western Cape;
  2. 16 confirmed cases of Omicron
  3. (i) South Africa announced the discovery of a new variant, later named Omicron, on 25 November.

(ii) The first cases of Omicron in the Western Cape were confirmed on 2 December.
