Education
With regard to a news report from eNCA on 27 October 2020:
Whether she can confirm that 5 000 matric learners have dropped out during the 2020 academic year; if so, what is the relevant source for this number?
The WCED will only be able to determine the throughput rate of learners in Grade 12 once the attendance figures of those that sat the final examinations has been determined.
The figure of 5 000 was a projected possible figure presented to the Department of Basic Education (DBE). However, we believe that this is not accurate. The WCED has looked at its screening data and has also determined that out of all the Grade 12 learners registered this year, only 89 learners have not been registered for screening.
Therefore, only 89 learners have not returned to school from 1 June up until now.
However, this does not provide an accurate projection either as some learners may have been screened but have since dropped out.
