Whether his Department plays a role in ensuring that legislation regarding firebreaks are enforced; if not, which department is responsible to ensure that the legislation is adhered to; if so, what is his Department’s plan to communicate with national government entities about the need for firebreaks on their property?

Answer Body: 

No, The Western Cape Department of Local Government is not responsible for legislation regarding firebreaks. The National Department of the Environment, Forestry and Fisheries is responsible for the administration of The National Veld and Forest Act, Act 101 of 1998

The Western Cape Department of Local Government through the Sub Directorate Fire Services is represented on the Western Cape Umbrella Fire Protection Association on which the national entities are active members. Communication is affected on this forum.
