Whether his Department has established community Wi-Fi hotspots in any of the 406 wards in the province; if not, why not; if so, (a) in how many wards have they been established and (b) at which physical addresses have they been provided, including the ward number and physical address of each Wi-Fi hot-spot?

 

Answer Body: 

10. The Public WiFi hotspots have been installed in various wards across the province.

(a)    Public WiFi hotspots are currently active in 306 different wards across the Western Cape. The hotspots can only be installed at Western Cape Government sites that are connected to broadband at the Phase 2 minimum connectivity speed of 100Mbps. In total, there are Western Cape Government buildings in 375 of the 406 wards in the Western Cape.

(b)    Attached is the current list of sites showing the physical addresses and ward numbers. Also note that all information about the Public WiFi hotspot project, including the list of sites, is publicly available at www.westerncape.gov.za/wifi
